Addis 4.1.2: New omni-roast profiles and app updates

The Nucleus Coffee Tools team is set to release Version 4.1.2 for the LINK sample roaster in early February 2025. Packed with significant updates, the new firmware and app features will elevate precision, versatility, and usability for coffee professionals.

Central to this release is the expansion of omni roast profiles, alongside major advancements in the LINK App’s functionality. This update demonstrates Nucleus Coffee Tools’ continued dedication to empowering roasters at every skill level.

LINK App and Firmware Updates

The LINK App has undergone a transformation in Version 4.1.2, making it even more powerful and intuitive. Following feedback from a range of global users, including the desire for more precise roast profile recommendations and improved memory, the latest Addis release includes a range of key updates:

1010 Power Curves/Roasting Profiles: The inclusion of an additional 60 power curves (from 850) provides increased profile customisation and precision to meet the nuanced demands of coffee roasting.

24 Roast Plans: The style of roast curves that create the basis for the Power Curves, the addition of 7 new Roast Plans provides a wider array of pre-programmed roast styles that provide flexibility for handling diverse coffee types.

Improved Memory Processing: Faster, more reliable system performance ensures roasters experience fewer interruptions and smoother operations.

Improvement to Advanced Dial-In feature: Detailed and simplified solutions for fine-tuning profiles ensure consistency and optimal flavour development. Within the Advanced Dial-in feature in the LINK App, users will now be able to provide more information about their coffee in order to receive more tailored roasting solutions.

Omni-roasting: Theory and updates

Omni roasting is an approach designed to create profiles that balance attributes suitable for both filter and espresso brewing methods. By carefully controlling heat application and development time, omni roasts enhance clarity, sweetness, and mouthfeel while maintaining versatility.

One of the key innovations in Version 4.1.2 is the inclusion of Development Time Ratio (DTR) recommendations for each omni profile. The LINK App will provide users with three tailored DTR percentages depending on their brewing goals:

• Filter: For brighter, lively brews with enhanced acidity, recommended DTRs range between 8–10%.
• Omni: A balanced profile suitable for both filter and espresso methods, with DTRs in the 10–15% range.
• Espresso: Designed for richer body and caramelisation, with DTRs ranging from 15–18%.

These recommendations provide a clear starting point for users to fine-tune their roast profiles. By selecting the DTR that aligns with their desired brewing method, roasters can achieve consistency while still having the flexibility to experiment.

• Omni D: Enhances aromatics, weight, and texture in washed coffees while maintaining versatility for espresso.
• Omni E: Focuses on low, prolonged heat soak and a delayed first crack for remarkable filter or espresso profiles.
• Omni F: Inspired by advanced roasting techniques, balancing extended Maillard phases with flexibility for filter or espresso.
