Nucleus Coffee Tools has once again been recognised at the Australian Good Design Awards, receiving a prestigious accolade in the Product Design: Housewares and Objects category for its innovation, the NCD Pulse.

Announced on October 15, 2025, this recognition marks another milestone, following a 2023 win for the Paragon and 2024 Gold Award for the Paragon Espresso. The award celebrates excellence in design, innovation, and impact across multiple industries, showcasing how thoughtful engineering and aesthetic precision can transform everyday experiences — even in a niche field like coffee preparation.

The NCD Pulse builds on the legacy of the original NCD (Nucleus Coffee Distributor), introducing vibration-assisted distribution technology that helps baristas achieve a perfectly even coffee bed before tamping. The tool’s pulse mechanism loosens and redistributes coffee grounds with gentle precision, reducing static and promoting consistency in espresso extraction.

Developed in collaboration with Formswell, an Australian industrial design studio, the NCD Pulse reflects a shared commitment to performance-driven design and tactile excellence. Its sleek form, ergonomic handling, and precision mechanics make it both an aesthetic and functional evolution of a modern barista essential.

Upon conferring the award, the Australian Good Design Awards Jury praised the NCD Pulse for its ingenuity and execution.

“The NCD Pulse is an advanced coffee distribution tool designed for baristas and coffee enthusiasts. This is a well-considered product with a clear, user-friendly operation and thoughtful attention to user experience,” they said.

“While its application is niche, it demonstrates focused innovation within its specific context. A great product for professionals and enthusiasts that demonstrates clear innovation based on research in a well-designed, intuitive and robust package. An inspiring project that raises the bar.”

This recognition highlights how a seemingly small improvement in a specialised field can have wide-reaching implications — reinforcing consistency, efficiency, and quality in professional coffee preparation.

A tool trusted by champions

Since its release in February 2025, the NCD Pulse has quickly become a fixture on the world’s competition stages. Its precision-engineered design and vibration-assisted distribution have made it a trusted tool among some of the most accomplished baristas in the industry.

From the World Coffee in Good Spirits Championship to national titles across Asia, Europe, and the Americas, the NCD Pulse has already played a role in multiple podium finishes. This includes 2nd place at the 2025 World Coffee in Good Spirits Championship (Danny Wilson), 5th place at the 2025 World Coffee in Good Spirits Championship (Vladyslav Demonenko) 5th place at the 2024 World Barista Championship (Junghwan Lim), and more than 14 national finalists from a range of competition disciplines.

More recently, the NCD Pulse was used by a number of national representatives at the World Barista Championship, which celebrated its 25th year in Milan, Italy.
