Ten Years of the NCD: Introducing the Limited Edition NCD10

Ten years ago, the Nucleus Coffee Distributor helped introduce a new step to espresso preparation. Now, to mark a decade since its commercial release, Nucleus Coffee Tools is celebrating the history of the NCD with the limited edition NCD10.

Available in two models — the classic NCD and NCD Pulse — the NCD10 celebrates ten years of development, experimentation and refinement, from the earliest handmade prototypes to the distribution tools used by baristas around the world today.

Each NCD10 model features a special anniversary design and an individual unit number from 1 to 1500, creating a limited release that connects the latest generation of the NCD with the tool’s origins.

From an idea to the world stage

The story of the NCD began well before its commercial release.

Between 2011 and 2015, more than 11 prototypes of what was then known as the ONA Coffee Distributor, or OCD, were produced. Different bases, materials and functions were tested with a straightforward objective: to create a more repeatable way of distributing ground coffee in the portafilter before tamping.

The idea was put to its biggest test in 2015.

Nucleus Coffee Tools founder Saša Šestić used one of the early OCD prototypes during his winning routine at the 2015 World Barista Championship. The following year, the first commercial version was released, becoming the first commercially available coffee distribution tool designed specifically for espresso preparation.

Its premise was simple: improve the consistency of coffee distribution, create a more repeatable puck and give baristas greater control over espresso preparation.

It was an approach that would soon become familiar across the coffee industry.

Introducing the NCD10

The NCD10 brings together different points in the evolution of the Nucleus Coffee Distributor as part of a limited tenth-anniversary release.

Available as both the NCD Classic and NCD Pulse, each model features a dedicated NCD10 anniversary design and an individual unit number from 1 to 1500.

The release is a celebration of how far the idea has travelled since the earliest prototypes — from a tool developed to solve a specific problem in Saša’s own espresso preparation to a concept that has since become commonplace on coffee bars around the world.

“Although I believed in its potential, I never expected how much of an impact [the NCD] would have on the world of coffee tools,” Saša says.

When the original OCD distributor was being developed, coffee distribution tools were not yet an established part of espresso preparation. In the years since, countless tools have followed the same fundamental premise: that improving the distribution of ground coffee before tamping can help create a more consistent approach to espresso.

For Saša, that makes the NCD10 as much about recognising the original idea as celebrating the tool itself.

“Seeing distribution become such a normal part of espresso preparation is probably the biggest reminder of how far the NCD has come. Ten years felt like the right moment to celebrate where it started, while still showing how much the idea has evolved.”

The two NCD models represent different stages in that evolution.

The NCD (classic) carries forward the mechanical approach that established the original distributor: providing a repeatable method of distributing ground coffee horizontally across the coffee bed before tamping.

The NCD Pulse takes that idea further. Introduced in 2025, its battery-powered Pulse Vibration was developed to address distribution vertically throughout the coffee puck, rather than focusing solely on the surface.

Despite the difference in technology, both tools begin with the same underlying question: how can the preparation of espresso be made more consistent?

“The technology can change, but the problem we are trying to solve is still very similar,” Saša says. “We want to understand what is happening inside the coffee puck and find practical ways to give baristas more control over it.”

Rather than replacing the approach of the original NCD, the Pulse represents another stage in that process of experimentation — applying new technology to a challenge Nucleus has been exploring since the first prototypes were produced more than a decade ago.

A limited release for ten years of the NCD

The NCD10 editions have been created specifically to mark the tenth anniversary of the NCD’s commercial release.

Both versions carry the specialised NCD10 identity and are individually numbered, with only 1500 units of each model produced as part of the anniversary edition.

For Nucleus Coffee Tools, the intention was to create something that acknowledged the history of the product without separating it from the tools used by baristas today.

“We didn’t want the NCD10 to just look backwards,” Saša says. “It is a celebration of the original NCD, but having both the Classic and the Pulse allows us to show where we started and where ten years of development has taken us.”

That progression has included more than 11 early prototypes, a World Barista Championship-winning routine, multiple generations of the OCD and NCD, changes in materials and construction, and most recently the introduction of Pulse Vibration.

Few coffee tools remain unchanged for a decade — and the NCD was never intended to. What has remained consistent is the motivation behind them: to understand coffee preparation more deeply and develop tools that can make it more repeatable.

From the earliest prototypes made between 2011 and 2015 to the introduction of the NCD Pulse ten years later, its history has been shaped by a willingness to question the existing approach, test new ideas and continue refining the result.

The NCD10 celebrates that history, but it also marks a point along a much longer process.

“We look forward to sharing this, and the next 10 years of innovation with baristas and coffee lovers across the globe,” Saša says.

The NCD10 Classic and NCD10 Pulse will be available in limited, individually numbered quantities, celebrating ten years since the commercial release of the Nucleus Coffee Distributor — and the ideas that continue to shape what comes next.
